Street Hockey
Street hockey also known as Road hockey, deck hockey, ground hockey, or ball hockey is a type of Hockey played with or without skates. It is possible to play with either a puck or ball, although a roller hockey puck is required when not on ice. Generally, the game is played with little to no protective equipment, therefore intense physical contact is not very common and is played without body checking but does permit a level of physical contact similar to that allowed in basketball. If a puck is used, for safety the puck usually must not be raised in the air lifted or roofed. However, rules and playing styles can differ from area to area depending upon the traditions a certain group has set aside. Street hockey is commonly played in the United States and Canada. Beach Hockey, a variation of street hockey, is a common sight on Southern California beaches. On ice the game is played on ice skates on pavement it may be played in shoes or in inline skates. The goals often are marked by whatever objects are handy for example, using two soda cans or water bottles as goal posts, although goal nets either designed for street hockey or ice hockey could also be used. Trash cans are also commonly used objects when there is no goal present for street hockey games.Due to the general prohibition of body checks, most of the pads and other safety equipment used for ice or roller hockey are not worn or required to be worn in street hockey games. However, most skaters tend to play with a minimum of hockey gloves and shin guards. Shin guard are often of the soccer type when the game is played on foot. Goalies typically wear equipment similar in appearance to their ice hockey counterparts so as to help block more of the goal area. However, such goalie equipment used in street hockey is generally lighter than that used in ice hockey due to the reduced weight and density of the ball that is typically used in street hockey as compared to the rubber puck used in ice hockey.A street hockey stick is a special kind of stick. It has two main parts, the shaft,or stick, and the blade. The shaft is often made of aluminum or wood. The blade is usually made of polyurethane. The blade attaches to the shaft by a screw. Some street hockey sticks are made in onepiece form and are made out of plastic. Ice hockey and inline hockey sticks can also be used. However, street hockey sticks are usually cheaper and are more common for this reason.
The word CAR! is a common one to hear on busier streets which generally means stop the game and move the goal nets. This is often followed by the phrase game on once the car has passed. The game often begins with a so called NHL faceoff, in which the two opposing centers hit their sticks against each other three times saying N, H, L. Immediately following the L the two players fight to see who claims possession of the ball or puck.Although Street hockey is popular throughout Canada and the United States, some residents have raised concerns about how street hockey disturbs suburban neighbourhoods with the noise that the game creates and balls being accidentally shot into the residents yards. In big cities, however, there are concerns such as cars and pedestrians. In Toronto, a ban was recently imposed on playing street hockey on city streets, but was turned down due to public outcry against this controversial idea.A popular alternative to playing hockey on the street in Canada is to play in outdoor lacrosse boxes. The lacrosse boxes contain the same asphalt surface as the streets, but offers a more realistic feeling of hockey since the playing area is larger than the average street, plus there are boards that surround the lacrosse box. The only downside to this is the smaller size of the lacrosse nets that are already in place.Similarly to lacrosse boxes, outdoor roller hockey rinks are becoming quite popular in public areas around the United States which allow for a place to play off the sometimes dangerous streets. Outdoor roller hockey rinks are usually covered in a sport court surface so equipment does not wear down as quickly as on asphalt. Many can also be covered to allow play during wet weather, and lighted for nighttime hockey.Street hockey is most popular in Canada, and parts of the northern United States. It is also quite popular on outdoor roller rinks, city parks, and playgrounds of New York City, Toronto, and Montreal. In the United States the term street hockey is a generic one and usually refers to an ice hockey based game that is played without inline skates when inline skates are worn the game is usually called roller hockey and is rarely played on public streets. In the United States street hockey is most often played on outdoor basketball or tennis courts as well as indoor basketball courts andor gymnasiums. The walls or fencing of these rinks serve to keep the ball or the less often used puck in play similarly to the boards of an ice rink.

Bobby Housser was named the MVP for assisting Steve Kendall to tie the game with seconds left and then his Overtime gamewinning goal. There are now a number of organized street hockeydek hockeyball hockey leagues throughout the United States and the world, in a number of cities, and for a variety of age groups. A standard ice hockey puck is black, inch thick . mm, inches in diameter . mm, and weighs between . and ounces g some pucks are heavier or lighter than standard see below. Pucks are often marked with silkscreened team or league logos on one or both faces. The game evolved in Great Britain by from bandy, which was played with a ball on ice by field hockey players who wanted to continue to train during the European winters. Early forms of ice hockey, once known as Canadian rules bandy, used a ball rather than a puck when it first came to North America from Europe. Early players of the game found that the rubber ball used in field hockey was far too active on the hard ice surface, so they cut off the top and bottom of the ball to form the hockey puck.citations needed It is often saidwho that the puck was first used in organized play to protect spectators from the highly active ball used previously. Today, pucks are frozen a few hours before the game to further reduce bouncing during play.citations neededThe origin of the word puck is obscure. Though commonly believed to be it is evidently not connected to Shakespeares Puck or the mythical Puck.
Street Hockey Nomenclature

One of the most common is a blue, oz g puck that is used for training younger players who are not yet able to use a standard puck. Heavier oz g training pucks, typically reddish pink or reddish orange in color, are also available for players looking to develop the strength of their shots or improve their stick handling skills. Players looking to increase wrist strength often practice with steel pucks which weigh lb g these pucks are not used for shooting, as they could seriously harm other players. A hollow, lightweight fluorescent orange puck is available for road or floor hockey. Other variants, some with plastic ball bearings or glides, are available for use for road or roller hockey. The FoxTrax smart puck was developed by the FOX television network when it held NHL broadcasting rights for the U.S. The puck had integrated electronics to track its position on screen a blue streak traced the path of the puck across the ice. The streak would turn red if the puck was shot especially hard. This was an experiment in broadcasting intended to help viewers unfamiliar with hockey to better follow the game by making the puck more visible. It was illreceived by many traditional hockey fans, but appreciated by many of the more casual viewers. The system debuted with much publicity in the All Star game at the Boston Fleet Center on January th, .
While this production had the highest ratings of any hockey game to date, the system was shelved when Fox Sports lost the NHL broadcast rights three years later.During a game, pucks can reach speeds of miles per hour kmh or more when struck, and are potentially dangerous to players and spectators. Puckrelated injuries at hockey games are not uncommon. This led to the evolution of various types of protective gear for players, most notably the goalie mask. The most serious incident involving a spectator took place on March , , when a thirteen year old girl, Brittanie Cecil, died two days after being struck on the head by a hockey puck deflected into the crowd at a National Hockey League game between the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets in Columbus. This is the only known incident of this type to have occurred in the history of the league. Partly as a result of this tragedy, plexiglass panels sitting atop the boards of hockey rinks to protect spectators have been supplemented with mesh nets that extend above the upper edge of the plexiglass.Icing the puck is shooting the puck from the defending players half of the playing surface their side of the center red line across the opposing teams goal line on either side of the goal, as a delaying tactic or a sometimes desperate defensive play intended to shift the momentum of play away from the offensive team. Except when the defending team is shorthanded because of a penalty, it is a rule infraction that generally results in a stoppage of play to return the puck to the offending teams end of the ice for a faceoff. Since the resumption of play in the National Hockey League after the – lockout, a team that has a player ice the puck also must keep the same players on the ice, for the ensuing faceoff, as were on the ice when the icing infraction happened.During the – season, a rule was implemented which penalizes any player intentionally or accidentally shooting the puck out of the rink from their teams defensive zone. The rule was intended to eliminate the contradictory nature of the previous version of the rule, which only applied to goaltenders.NHL regulation pucks were not required for professional play until the – season, but were standardized for consistent play and ease of manufacture half a century earlier, by Art Ross, in . Major manufacturers of pucks exist only in Canada, Russia, the Czech Republic, the Peoples Republic of China, and Slovakia.
Foundation of modern hockey
The black rubber of the puck is made up of a mix of natural rubber, antioxidants, bonding materials and other chemicals to achieve a balance of hardness and resilience. This mixture is then turned in a machine composed of metal rollers, where workers add extra natural rubber, and ensure that the mixing is even. Samples are then put into a machine that analyzes if the rubber will harden at the right temperature. An automated apparatus, called a pultrusion machine, extrudes the rubber into long circular logs that are three inches in diameter and then cut into one inch thick pieces while it is still soft. These preforms are then manually put into molds that are the exact size of a finished puck. There are up to mold cavities per molding palette, capable of producing up to , pucks per week. The molds are then compressed. This compression may be done cold and or with the molds heated to degrees Fahrenheit for minutes,, depending upon the proprietary methods of the manufacturer. They come out hard and then are allowed to sit for hours. Each puck is manually cleaned with a trimmer machine to get rid of excess rubber. The molding process adds a diamond crosshatch texture around the edge of the puck for more friction between the stick and puck for better control and puck handling.Souvenir and practice pucks are made by a similar but faster process, that uses larger preforms, – in – cm thick, puts them into molds automatically, and applies more pressure and heat over a shorter period of time to compress the puck into the standard size. This allows approximately twice as many pucks to be manufactured in the same time period as the more exacting production of NHL regulation pucks.A hockey puck, similar to its ice hockey counterpart, although made from plastic causing it to be lighter and with small ribs that protrude from the top and bottom of the puck which limit the amount of contact with the surface. This allows for better sliding motion and less friction.Roller hockey pucks are typically produced in light, visible colors such as red, orange, yellow, pink, or green. Red is the most popular color, although it is possible to find a roller hockey puck in almost any color.Roller hockey pucks were created so inline hockey and street hockey players could play with a puck instead of a ball on a number of different surfaces including Sport Court, hardwood, concrete, or asphalt.
An underwater hockey puck occasionally referred to as a squid in the United Kingdom, but more commonly and internationally simply as a puck, while essentially the same in appearance as an ice hockey puck, differs in that it has a lead core weighing approximately three pounds .kg within a teflon, plastic or rubberized coating. This makes the puck dense enough to sink to the bottom of the swimming pool while affording some protection to the tiles. There are variations on this theme, but all conform to regulations stipulating overall dimensions and weight. The term puck is sometimes also applied to similar though often smaller gaming discs in other sports and games, including novuss, shuffleboard, table shuffleboard and air hockey.Inline hockey, often referred to simply as roller hockey in the United States, is a team sport played on a smooth plastic surface, such as Sport Court, intended to allow for least resistance with the puck and players wheels. Inline hockey is most popular in areas with indoor artificial inline hockey rinks which make it a yearround sport at the amateur, scholastic, and professional levels. It is a North American professional sport, and is represented by the Professional Inline Hockey Association and Major League Roller Hockey at the highest level. While there are total members of the International Roller Sports Federation FIRS and total members of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, the United States have finished in most of the coveted st, nd and rd placed at the Inline Hockey World Championships. While the general characteristics of the game are the same wherever it is played, the exact rules depend on the particular code of play being used. The two most important codes are those of the International Roller Sports Federation FIRS and the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF inline hockey rulebooks. The Professional Inline Hockey Association and Major League Roller Hockey rulebooks are derived from these.Inline hockey is played on an inline hockey rink. During normal play, there are five players per side on the floor at any time, each of who is on inline skates. There are four players and one goaltender per side. The objective of the games is to score goals by shooting a hard plastic disc, the puck, into the opponents goal net, which is placed at the opposite end of the rink. The players may control the puck using a long stick with a blade that is commonly curved at one end.

A player is said to shoot left if he holds his stick with the left hand on the bottom and the right hand on top, and is said to be right shot if he holds the stick with the right hand at the bottom and left hand on top. Most righthanded players that is, in general, players who write, eat, and throw with their right hand shoot left and most lefthanded players shoot right. This is because the bottom hand delivers most of the power while the top hand is responsible for control and stickhandling. Having the dominant hand at the top of the stick allows the player to have greater control and reach when wielding the stick onehanded, although many players prefer to shoot with their dominant hand. Goalies usually hold their stick with their dominant hand on top and their lessdominant hand is used for catching and is placed on the stick below the other hand only when stickhandling the puck.Players may also redirect the puck with any part of their bodies, subject to certain restrictions. Players can angle their feet so the puck can redirect into the net, but there can be no kicking motion. Players may not intentionally bat the puck into the net with their hands.Inline hockey is an offside game, meaning that forward passes are allowed, unlike in rugby. Major League Roller Hockey is currently the only North American league that has an offsides rule, where a puck could not be passed to a player that crossed the center line before the puck, but could be carried over the center line with teammates offsides and still be legal. The four players other than the goaltender are typically divided into either two forwards and two defencemen, or three forwards and one defensemen. The forward positions usually consist of a center and one or two wingers. Usually in inline hockey, forwards and defensemen stay together as units or lines unlike ice hockey where forwards and defensemen are separate units. A substitution of an entire unit at once is called a line change. Teams typically employ alternate sets of forward line and defensive pairings when shorthanded or on a power play. Substitutions are permitted at any time during the course of the game, although during a stoppage of play the home team is permitted the final change. When players are substituted during play, it is called changing on the fly.The boards surrounding the floor help keep the puck in play and they can also be used as tools to play the puck. The referees, linesmen and the outsides of the goal are in play and do not cause a stoppage of the game when the puck or players are influenced by either bouncing or colliding into them.
Play can be stopped if the goal is knocked out of position. Play often proceeds for minutes without interruption. When play is stopped, it is restarted with a faceoff. Two players face each other and an official drops the puck to the floor, where the two players attempt to gain control of the puck. Most inline hockey leagues only have one major rule of play that limit the movement of the puck the puck going out of play. The puck goes out of play whenever it goes past the perimeter of the inline rink onto the players benches, over the glass, or onto the protective netting above the glass and a stoppage of play should be called by the officials. It also does not matter if the puck comes back onto the surface from those areas as the puck is considered dead once it leaves the perimeter of the rink. Major League Roller Hockey on the other hand, institutes offsides and an illegal clearing calls similar to ice hockey.Under most inline hockey rules, each team may carry a maximum of players and two goaltenders on their roster. PIHA rules restrict the total numbers of players per game to plus two goaltenders, but allows no more than players and four goaltenders on their professional and minor rosters. MLRH rules restrict the total number of players per game to plus two goaltenders but allow each team to protect up to players including goaltenders. In most inline hockey leagues, fighting is against the rules, and will probably land the offending player ejected from the game, with a possible suspension from future games. However, certain leagues do allow it, such as the former league Pro Beach Hockey. The former Roller Hockey International was against fighting, as they handed out a onegame suspension without pay to whoever was involved in a deemed fight by the league. Needless to say however, fights did occasionally occur in Roller Hockey International. Also, fighting does occur occasionally in Major League Roller Hockey, as well.An inline hockey game usually consists of either two halves or four quarters of twelve minutes each, the clock running only when the puck is in play. The teams start at alternate ends and change for the second part of the game. Recreational leagues and childrens leagues often play games with three periods of fifteen minutes each, with the clock running even when the puck is out of play. Youth competitive tournament levels run either two halves of fifteen minutes, or three periods of ten minutes, both with the clock running even when the puck is out of play.
Other forms of hockey
Various procedures are used if a game is tied. In most medal rounds of tournament play, as well as in the PIHA and MLRH playoffs, North Americans favor sudden death overtime, in which teams continue to play a regulation period of time until a goal is scored.Through the regular season PIHA games were settled with a minute sudden death period with players plus a goalie per side, followed by if still tied, minute sudden death period with players plus a goalie per side, followed by if still tied, a minute sudden death period with player plus a goalie per side. If the score remained tied after the overtime periods, the subsequent shootout consists of three players from each team taking penalty shots. After these six total shots, the team with the most goals is awarded the victory. If the score is still tied, the shootout then proceeds to a sudden death format. Regardless of the number of goals scored during the shootout by either team, the final score recorded will awarded the winning team one more goal than the score at the end of regulation time. Beginning with the regular season, PIHA eliminated the minute player plus a goalie and went straight to the shootout. Until the season, PIHA awarded the winner in overtimeshootout points in the standings and the loser points. Beginning with the season, PIHA awarded the winner points and the losing team in overtime point in the standing.MLRH regular season games are decided with a shootout with five players from each team taking penalty shots. After these ten total shots, the team with the most goals is awarded the victory. If the score is still tied, the shootout then proceeds to a sudden death format. Variations in curves include its lie and its curve type. Most companies that produce sticks have sponsored players and in return, use their custom curve on publicly retailed sticks. To shoot with a left curved stick, the stick is held with the right hand at the top and the left hand partway down the shaft. To shoot with a right curved stick, the stick is held with the left hand at the top and the right hand partway down the shaft.

Most people who are righthanded shoot with a left curved stick, and most people who are lefthanded shoot with a right curved stick. This keeps their dominant hand at the top of the stick, allowing more control. Sticks also have flex numbers, a number on the stick ranging upward from . It indicates how much the stick will bend before breaking when pressed on the ice. The higher the number is, the more pressure it is able to withstand. This flexing is what enables slapshots. There are early representations and reports of hockeytype games being played on ice in the Netherlands, and reports from Canada from the beginning of the nineteenth century, but the modern game was initially organized by students at McGill University, Montreal in who, by two years later, codified the first set of ice hockey rules and organized the first teams. Some notable players in ice hockey are Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Sidney Crosby and Maurice The Rocket Richard.Hockey is played at a number of levels, by all ages.
